The Marcus boys’ basketball team was so close to winning its first ever state title last weekend in Austin. Many out there feel the Marauders will be back with a vengeance – as early as next year.
Marcus – whose season ended in a heartbreaking 45-43 overtime loss to eventual state champion Fort Bend Bush in the state semifinal – returns practically its entire roster in 2011. They had just five seniors this year as a core group of sophomores – led by Marcus Smart, Phil Forte and A.J. Luckey -- did more than their part for a school-record 37-3 finish.
Marcus – the state’s fifth-ranked Class 5A team – will take its amazing 32-2 record and 11-game win streak into the upcoming Class 5A playoffs.
First-year head coach Danny Henderson said he wasn’t certain who his team would face in the first round as a veritable quagmire surfaced in District 5-5A heading into Tuesday’s regular-season finale. The only thing he knew was it could be any of the three Keller schools (Central, Fossil Ridge and Keller).
Marcus eked past Colleyville Heritage 58-55 on Monday and moves on to face Plano West in the second round of the Class 5A girls’ basketball playoffs.
That tough non-district schedule is paying off big for the Flower Mound girls’ basketball team.
The Jaguars – who were 12-12 overall heading into District 6-5A play – are now 3-1 in league action after dismantling Lewisville on Tuesday, 55-36. Since losing the district opener to Marcus, the Jags have won the last three by an average margin of 26 points per game.
Marcus and Flower Mound are two of the biggest rivals in District 6-5A, and they will get first crack at one another on Friday in the league opener.
Marcus used a 15-2 run in the third quarter to outlast Highland Park 57-47 on Tuesday.
The Marauders improved to 9-1 overall with the win and took an eight-game winning streak into this weekend’s Marauder-Jaguar Classic. Marcus was slated to face Denton Ryan in the first round, though no scores were available as of press time.

Argyle’s Caden Dickerson was named Most Valuable Player at the recent Texas High School Coaches’ Association All Star Basketball game.
Dickerson – a Western Kentucky signee – led all scorers with 21 points to lead the North team past the South 81-80 last Monday. He was one of two MVP’s on the night as the South team named San Antonio Stephens’ Brandon Thompson as its MVP.
Flower Mound’s trip to the Class 5A playoffs didn’t quite go according to plan.
The Jags (17-18 overall) drew Euless Trinity in Monday’s first round opener and were quickly bounced from contention in a 57-37 blowout loss.
Marcus – the No. 6 ranked team in the state – improved to 2-0 in District 6-5A action on Tuesday with a commanding 68-58 win over Southlake Carroll.
Marcus took a rare loss on Tuesday, falling to Desoto 44-42 in non-district action.

A year after losing to Ardmore, the Argyle boys’ basketball team has its revenge.
The Eagles (7-1) won the rematch 55-43 on Tuesday and extended their new win streak to three games heading into this weekend’s Weatherford Tournament. Unfortunately, scores from Thursday’s opening round of tournament action were not available as of press time.
The Marcus girls’ basketball team improved to 8-4 overall on Tuesday with a 64-45 win over Frisco Liberty in non-district action.
