Sgt Trace Johannesen in his “dress blues” returned to his Argyle home after a tour in Iraq

A fourth generation Marine from Argyle returned home from Iraq last Friday night to a sea of American flags lining his street and dozens of yellow ribbons festooning the trees in his yard. Sgt. Trace Johannesen, U.S.M.C., was in town less than 48 hours, but his return meant the world to his parents Bob and Judy Johannesen of Canyon Oaks Estates. Sgt. Johannesen, 30, enjoyed the visit with family and friends before he left for Texas A & M University, where he began his senior year on Monday with the intent of completing his degree this spring.

This past Sunday, August 24, residents throughout Denton County assembled at Jake’s Hilltop Park, 4975 Timber Creek Road in Flower Mound, to commemorate the fourth anniversary of Jacob Lugo, a United States Marine who was killed in action (KIA) in Iraq, exactly 4 years ago. Retired Air Force Brigadier General Tom Webb, who is also a former mayor of Flower Mound, helped organize what was billed as, “A celebration of life” for Marine Lance Cpl. Jacob Lugo, the first military serviceman killed in action from Flower Mound. General Webb was the master of ceremonies and he gave tribute to Cpl. Lugo for his valor and sacrifice to his country. General Webb also thanked our local congressman. “All veterans have great respect for Congressman Burgess for all his support of veterans in Denton County,” he said.

The most important function of any police department is the prevention of crime. However, if a crime is committed, the “boys in blue” have a duty to arrest the offender. In addition, the aforementioned should, if at all possible, be accomplished without any harm to innocent bystanders. What recently occurred in Lewisville is an example of what might be called a hat trick of excellent police work, coupled with vigilant cooperation from the civilian sector of the community.

Four of the seven lake cities ballet theatre board of directors at the Highland Village Council Meeting

Highland Village held its bi-monthly meeting last night in the Highland Village council chambers.  Mayor Dianna Costa opened the meeting with presentations from the non-profit organizations that it supported in Highland Village. “We have asked the organizations to come once a year and give a small presentation about themselves so we can get to know them and their organization,” said Costa.

If you’re a business owner, storefront type or home-based, or, if your forte is fundraising for charities and other worthwhile causes, there is no better way to improve your opportunities for success than to get involved in the networking formula that makes it all happen. This southern Denton County area is blessed to have so many entrepreneurs with a sincere interest in giving back to the community they serve. In addition, we owe a debt of gratitude to the myriad volunteers who lend their valuable time to raise funds for those in need. Of course, networking can be accomplished in several ways, but perhaps the most advantageous route is to be a member of the Chamber of Commerce. With a strong advocate leading the way and hundreds of members joining you at various functions throughout the area, your chances of “connecting” with potential customers and clients are manifold.

The old adage, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” is advice that I received long ago and it rings more true every year.  After attending the Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce leads breakfast this week, I was once again reminded of the importance of thi...

It was about 3 a.m. and I was working the midnight shift with my partner on radio motor patrol in Brooklyn. Suddenly, as we turned a corner, we saw a car at the next intersection slowly moving past the red light. As we drove up on the auto it had come to rest halfway acro...
