Ten varsity players traveled to Allen, Texas at the end of April to compete in the 3A Region 2 Tournament. Zach Santagate (Freshman) and Molly McMullen (Senior) fell short in the first round of singles. Emma Welsh (Freshman) and Jack Ames (Senior) lost in the first round of mixed doubles. Daniel Alderson (Junior) and Andrew Morrison (Senior) defeated Castleberry boys in the first round of boys’ doubles, but were defeated in quarter final play.
In a nail-biting playback match against Wills Point, Lacy Blake (Freshman) and Andrea Beathard (Senior) took second place in girls’ doubles. The duo took the third set in a tie breaker. Both girls will be making their first appearance in state play.
After two 3 set matches, Maddie Schorlemmer (Freshman) took first place in girls’ singles, upsetting the number one seed from Farmersville. Schorlemmer’s first appearance at state as a Freshman is sure to get the attention of opponents who will face her the next three years.
Will Stein (Junior) showed no mercy as he handily defeated each opponent to take the top place in boys‘ singles. In the three matches played, Stein gave up only 2 games. Look for a strong showing by this Eagle in State play.
The four state qualifiers are hard at work preparing for the State Tournament to be held May 11 and 12 at Lakeway in Austin, Texas.
