Flower Mound may be in the third round of playoffs. But they feel like they just got started.
The Jaguars (27-8) will face Plano (23-8) in a best-of-3 series at Frisco High School. Game 1 was held Wednesday, but no scores were available as of press time. The teams are expected to play a double header on Saturday if a Game 3 is necessary. Game 2 is set for noon.
“I think it’s going to be a good series because both teams are so much alike,” Flower Mound head coach Mark Larriba said. “They finished as the No. 3 seed just like us, so it’s going to be a dog fight.”
Plano comes in with plenty of momentum of its own, having knocked off Coppell 1-0 last week. Coppell (30-3) was ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 5A and no. 9 in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association rankings. Plano was led by standout ace Abbi Frakes. Frakes -- a Ouachita Baptist signee -- allowed five hits and finished with seven strikeouts as she held on to a 1-run lead from the very first inning of work. Coppell left 11 runners stranded overall.
Plano hasn’t lost since April 20 and has won six of its last seven games.
Flower Mound has won eight of its last 10 games dating back to District 6-5A play. They advanced to this point thanks to sweeps of Grapevine and Plano East.
In the last series against Plano East, Taylor Mosher gave up just 16 hits in the two games combined with 14 runs scored. Her offensive teammates did plenty to give her support. In Game 1, they punched out 16 hits in an 11-8 win. This included three extra-base hits from Jordan Jennings, Ashley Fultz and Stacia Boeckstiegel.
In Game 2, the Jags pounded out a 7-6 win thanks to a home run from Rachel Scott. Overall, Mallory Huse has been huge for the Jags in the postseason. Huse has gone 11-for-19 in the four games. She also threw a runner out at home when her team was trailing 6-4 in Game 2 against Plano East.
“The whole year it seems like different people have stepped up for us,” Larriba said.
“I still think we haven’t started clicking on all cylinders, and that’s the good part because I know what we are capable of. I think our focus has improved because of the excitement of the playoffs.”
The Jaguars have already exercised some demons from last year by beating Grapevine in the first round. Last year, the Mustangs beat Flower Mound in a one-game playoff in the first round. This time around, however, the Jags dominated with 12-1 wins in each game.
