Flower Mound resident, Jeffrey Weisheit, 17, is having a swinging good time on the links. Recently, the Marcus High School student performed like a pro during the second round of the Randy Smith Classic presented by the Lubbock Sports Authority. Weisheit, who struggled in the first round with a 10-over-par 82, came back in round two with a 10-under-par 62. Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA), the Classic is a 54-hole stroke event held at the Rawls Course at Texas Tech University. The tournament field consists of 99 players, 75 boys and 24 girls, from nine states and Mexico.
The AJGA is a 501 C-3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The largest association of its kind, the AJGA has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of more than 5000 junior golfers from 49 states and more than 25 countries. AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf, boasting more than 160 former juniors currently playing on the PGA and LPGA tours. Among many others, alumni include, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
Mr. Weisheit’s 10-under-par 62 ties the all-time lowest score in relation to par in AJGA history and breaks the competitive course record at the Rawls course. Weisheit said he really had his putter working, but also said it was just one of those rare days where everything clicks and works together. His teammate in the tournament, Robbie Apfel, also from Marcus, shot a 78, 70 and 74.
