The Flower Mound boys’ basketball team pushed its overall record to 16-3 last weekend with an impressive first place finish at The Colony Tournament.
Brandon Troutman was named Most Valuable Player for the tournament as he scored 46 points in the team’s three games – including 17 in a 73-54 win over Frisco to advance to the finals. The team beat district foe Newman Smith 62-60 on the strength of a Cameron Cates three pointer as time expired.
“We had contributions from a lot of different people in this tournament, and we were very pleased with the attitude overall,” head coach Charles Freet said. “We shot extremely well in the first two games, and because of that, our intensity really picked up from there.”
The contributions were endless.
Carter Severns was named to the All-Tournament team, 14 players scored in the win over Frisco and 13 scored in a 68-51 win over Allen in the first round. Cates scored 15 points behind Troutman’s 21 in the Allen game while teammate Bryan Beaver stepped up big with 11 points against Frisco. Against Newman Smith in the finals, five players scored seven points or more, including 13 from Erik Hunter and 12 from Brad Renz.
Flower Mound trailed 48-46 heading into the fourth quarter after both teams had finished with tie scores after each of the previous two quarters. The Jaguars still trailed by one before Cates drilled his clutch three pointer at the buzzer to win going away.
“Newman Smith is a very good team and they have a lot of quickness to go with great shooting,” Freet said. “The three pointers they hit really changed the complexion of the game and so we had to do everything we could to keep up with them and play good defense.”
The win was big as the team has won 12 of its last 13 games (last seven in a row) heading into a Friday showdown with Carrollton Creekview. Both teams are tied with Newman Smith and Lewisville with 2-0 records in District 6-5A.
Creekview, however, has shown inconsistencies throughout this season with a 9-10 record. They went 1-2 in the Plano Wildcat Classic last weekend and are 4-4 over the last eight games. Their two district wins came over Carrollton R.L. Turner and Coppell – both of which have combined for an 0-4 start.
The Mustangs’ bright spot this season has been Ryan Glanzer. Glanzer scored 58 points in the Plano tournament, including 24 in a 73-43 win over Arlington in Game 2.
“You aren’t going to shut him down, but you hope to limit him as much as possible,” Freet said.
Freet added that while his team is doing well, they don’t want to fall into the trap of feeling like they don’t have any room for improvement – particularly against teams in 6-5A.
“When you look at this district, I think it’s one of the best from top to bottom because there are so many quality teams,” Freet said. “We feel fortunate to be 2-0 right now, but we know what challenges we will face and you simply can’t be satisfied with where you are at.”
After the Creekview game, the team will face Coppell, Lewisville, Newman Smith and Hebron to close out the first half of league play.
