ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Argyle’s Caden Dickerson was named Most Valuable Player at the recent Texas High School Coaches’ Association All Star Basketball game.

Dickerson – a Western Kentucky signee – led all scorers with 21 points to lead the North team past the South 81-80 last Monday. He was one of two MVP’s on the night as the South team named San Antonio Stephens’ Brandon Thompson as its MVP.

The game, as well as the football all star game the next evening, are part of a three-day convention in Austin each year. Dickerson was one of several area players there, including Ponder’s Isaiah Boxell.

“It was a great honor to even be nominated to play in the game itself,” said Dickerson, who is back in Western Kentucky preparing for the upcoming season. “Getting the MVP is a great honor. I was just trying to go out there and have some fun.”

Dickerson said all the players were intense at first, but seemed to relax as the game progressed. It sure lended to plenty of excitement as the game drew to a close. With the score tied at 80, Jordan Ashmore made a clutch free throw to seal the North win.

The South team had one last chance to steal the win but couldn’t get the shot off as time expired.

Dickerson averaged around 20 points per game last year as a senior at Argyle. He was a key cog in an Eagle team that advanced to the third round of playoffs and won 13 of its first 14 games. He was an all state player his junior year when the team went 34-4 and advanced to the regional semifinals.

“We were fortunate to go out to see him play (at the All Star game) and his performance was outstanding,” Argyle head coach John King said. “I am proud of him for so many reasons, but to play like that in such a prestigious game. It’s exciting. He was able to show the entire state just how good he is.”

King said Dickerson – a 6-foot-4-inch point guard -- is extremely close to having a shot at starting for Western Kentucky despite the fact the team is bringing back its top point guard.

“Nothing surprises me with that kid,” King added. “He’s a good kid, and it just goes to show the type of athletes we have here in Argyle.”

Dickerson has already been in camp with his new teammates trying to improve his chances.

“I think my chances are good, but getting to play as a team out here … I love it,” Dickerson said.
