ABOUT THE AUTHOR

A few months ago, Flower Mound Councilman Paul Stone announced that he was leaving his Place #2 seat because the exigencies of his regular job had narrowed his time commitment, making it difficult for him to give the proper attention to his elected position. After several weeks of interviews with prospective candidates for Mr. Stone’s seat, the Town Council appointed Al Filadoro to the position. On May 10 the town will hold an election for Mayor and 2 council seats. One of them is Place #2 and Steve Dixon, a resident and small business owner in town, says he wants to give the voters a chance to decide if he, or Mr. Filadoro is the best person to represent the town in that seat.

Dixon has been heavily involved in the community since he and his family moved to Flower Mound in July 2000. He and his wife, Amanda, are married 17 years and have 2 children who attend Liberty Elementary. In addition, they are members of Rockpointe Church in FM.  An active member of the FM Chamber of Commerce, serving as an Ambassador, Dixon has completed the Chamber’s “Leadership Flower Mound 2007 Course” after several members encouraged him to seek a larger role in the Town’s management. He has served on the FM Planning and Zoning Commission since 2004 and has been active in the town’s SmartGrowth Commission. Last year, he served on the Lakeside Stakeholders advisory committee and on the Citizen’s Budget Partners Committee. “We do a lot of things right here,” said Dixon, “but we have plenty of room for improvement. I’m convinced that I can help guide growth in a way that preserves what’s best about Flower Mound while ensuring that the changes we experience are managed wisely.”

In addition, Mr. Dixon wants to put a happier face on the Town. “The developer sees Flower Mound as difficult, as unresponsive, as hard to work with,” he said. “Yes, the Town should have high standards and we should hold developers accountable to the high quality we expect. Yet, we should be friendly with them and discuss with them ways in which to make something work. I want to make sure that people see a friendlier face in this town. You can agree to disagree with people, but you should leave them with the image of respect for them and for their proposals.”

Dixon’s platform consists of five priorities: Addressing the Town’s growing traffic and commuting challenges by quickly expanding and enhancing our streets and thoroughfares; Equipping our police and fire departments with all the tools needed to keep us safe; Ensuring a friendly and hospitable Town staff, dedicated to providing its citizens with the guidance and/or resources they need; Working with fellow Council members to develop a meaningful vision and to achieve its goals in the most cost efficient and effective manner possible; and encouraging desirable businesses to locate in Flower Mound.

The candidate will be attending Rotary, Chamber and other community and business meetings to speak about his reasons for running and will be prepared to debate his opponent as Election Day nears.
