Yes, I said Merry Christmas

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Is saying Merry Christmas still acceptable in this day and age?  I make a point to sign my emails with “Merry Christmas” after Thanksgiving and that’s a habit I got into years ago.  In business I am always hesitant doing that because I never know who I might offend, but my stubborn traditional values shine through each time as I click, send.  If I offend someone, oh well, that’s the way my mamma raised me.  It’s a real shame it would even enter my mind, but in today’s unscrupulous world, you never know.

This type of warped thinking doesn’t appear to be a real problem in our great state, but other parts of the world are more vulnerable. If you were to walk up the steps of the Washington State Capitol this week, you would see a tree for the holidays, a nativity scene and a sign denigrating religion. The sign reads, “At This season of the Winter Solstice, may reason prevail? There are no gods; no devils; no angels; no heaven or hell; there is only our natural world. Religion is but myth or superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.”

This sign was put up by a small fanatical atheist group that has gone mad with political correctness. If atheists want a public holiday honoring the winter solstice, they should petition their congress person.  Don’t just take the liberty to intrude on Christmas, our nation’s biggest holiday, with this crazed secular spewing. What’s next, an atheist display next to the welcome to Texas marker off of I-35?  I think not! We don’t celebrate Ramadan in this country because our traditions are Judeo-Christian, not Muslim, not Atheist.

Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire walks by the sign everyday on her way to work and turns the other cheek. She refuses to issue a statement about this incongruous frippery and appears to be a weak, confused leader.  She is allowing parody in Christmas displays, which is absurd. Christmas is a federal holiday honoring a religious man, Jesus.  Winter solstice is an astronomic calculation of seasonal change and nothing more. If you agree, you should respectfully tell the governor how you feel about this. If cowardly politicians don’t’ get the message, we can forget about traditions in this country. Her phone number is 360-902-4111.

Washington State is ground zero for the nuttiest secular causes on earth but this time the state has embarrassed itself and the nation. When we start allowing these moonstruck individuals to intrude on Christmas by setting up their propaganda on the steps of one of our state Capitols, we are flirting with disaster.  I have to believe these people were the ones that were cut from Santa Claus’s list each year as children. Perhaps, if they found God in their lives, Santa Claus would find them and so would peace and happiness.
