Former Marcus soccer standout Zach Barnes has been honored with a spot on the PARADE's 2010 All-America High School Boys Soccer Team.
Barnes, who graduated this past school year, is one of 35 athletes selected to this year’s squad -- which represents the best players from across the United States. Of those 35 athletes, Barnes was one of three players from Texas (Miguel Lopez from McAllen and Michael Ambrose from Frisco). There were four girls from Texas on the girls’ squad, including Coppell’s Chioma Ubogagu.

Flower Mound will open the first round of the Class 5A playoffs on Tuesday against Keller.
The Jaguars (10-6-6 overall) are the third seed out of District 6-5A and should have their hands full with the Indians, who sport a 12-4-5 record and first place finish in District 5-5A. Game time is slated for 8 p.m. at Grapevine’s Mustang-Panther Stadium.
Marcus boys’ soccer coach John Gall doesn’t typically look forward to breaks.
The Marauders wrapped up the regular season last Friday and won’t open the first round of the Class 5A playoffs until Tuesday night against Justin Northwest. This year, Gall is singing a different tune.
Flower Mound hopes to have healed up heading into a pivotal three-game stretch.
The Jaguars (3-1-3 in District 6-5A) enjoyed this past Tuesday off due to TAKS testing and seem rested as they host Southlake Carroll on Friday. Game time is slated for 7:45 p.m.
“We were fortunate to have beat them last time,” Flower Mound head coach David Doyle said. “They (Carroll) are, of course, still in the thick of things too so there is a lot riding on this game. We just wanted to take this time off to heal up and get ready for a big game.”
There will be a different twist to Friday’s District 6-5A showdown between the Marcus boys’ soccer team and rival Coppell than what most fans are used to.
Quite simply, a win for Marcus would put them in the driver’s seat for a potential district title while a win for Coppell keeps the Cowboys barely alive in an already muddled playoff race. In previous years, a match up like this so late in the season usually meant a chance at the crown for both teams.

Flower Mound boys’ soccer coach David Doyle knows how hard this year’s District 6-5A schedule will be. That’s why it’s more important than ever to get off to a fast start.
The Guyer boys’ soccer team won’t be an easy foe to knock off in the playoffs.
The Wildcats (13-4-4 overall) met Azle on Thursday in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs. The game marked the program’s eighth playoff game in the last three seasons as they have advanced at least to the third round in each of the last two seasons. Last year, they went four rounds deep before losing to Mansfield Legacy. Unfortunately, scores from Thursday weren’t available as of press time.
The Marcus girls’ soccer team needed a miracle to get back into this year’s Class 5A playoff race.
The Marauders – who will take on Colleyville Heritage in the first round at 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Justin Northwest – looked dead and buried just over a week ago before they managed two wins in the final three games to leapfrog rival Flower Mound for the fourth and final playoff spot
New Flower Mound girls’ soccer coach Trina Hamner doesn’t want her team to just be considered a preseason standout. She wants them to know what its like to win when it matters most.
The Jaguars are very close to doing just that. They head into Friday’s District 6-5A showdown with Southlake Carroll sporting a 2-4-1 record in league play – good enough for a one-game cushion over rival Marcus for the fourth and final playoff spot.
The Flower Mound girls’ soccer team improved to 8-2-1 overall with its dominating 5-0 win over Allen on Tuesday. The Jaguars will host Hebron on Friday in the District 6-5A opener.
“It was definitely a nice way to end the preseason,” new Flower Mound head coach Trina Hamner said. “I think everyone found a way to contribute and that was nice to see.”
The Guyer boys’ soccer team will put its 24-game District 11-4A win streak on the line Friday in this year’s league opener at Denton Ryan. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
