Marcus continues its rivalry with Grapevine on Friday at Mustang-Panther Stadium.

Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m. and the Marauders (1-0) are looking to pick up their fourth win in as many seasons over the Mustangs -- who beat Midlothian 30-27 in the season opener last week. Marcus piled up 349 yards rushing in a 33-13 win last Saturday.

Guyer sophomore quarterback J.W. Walsh (4) passes to the endzone during play last season.
Guyer -- the No. 4 ranked team in Class 5A -- will face 4A powerhouse Waxahachie on Saturday in the season opener for both teams. Game time is slated for 4:30 p.m. at Standridge Stadium in Carrollton.
Waxahachie is a preseason No. 3 in its class according to the Dallas Morning News’ Class 4A area poll. The two have never met, though would have in last year’s 4A playoffs had Waxahachie not lost to Longview in the regional finals. Longview went on to beat Guyer in the state semifinals.
“We saw how they played last year, they are traditional and have a lot of speed,” said Guyer head coach John Walsh, whose team combined with Waxahachie for just three losses a year ago. “In a lot of ways they remind me of us.”

Deion Sanders Jr. will lead the charge as quarterback for the Marcus offense this year.
Marcus opens the 2010 season in one week, and will feature one of the toughest offenses in 5A.
Yes, even in the post-Stephen Hopkins era, the Marauders are intent on proving they will be just as dangerous running the football. Quite honestly, in their mind there is no other way.
“Oh, we will be a running football team. That’s not going to change one bit,” said Marcus head coach Bryan Erwin, whose team went 7-4 last year and advanced to the area round. “We were the second leading scorers in school history here at Marcus, and we did it by controlling the football and the clock. We’ve got a chance to be just as good.”
That’s because even though the team’s main horse the last three years has been Hopkins -- who in that stretch rushed for 4,721 yards -- Erwin made it a point to keep him as fresh as possible by utilizing several smaller, lesser-known backs like Dagan Newsome and Rufus Mason in various packages.

Argyle Linebacker Trent Cantrell (53) returns for the Eagles this year.
Argyle head coach Todd Rodgers has thrust young football players into the spotlight before and managed to come away with quality results. This year will be no different, he said.
In June, the Eagles -- who last year went unbeaten through district play and advanced to the third round of the Class 3A playoffs -- graduated even more of their key contributors on both sides of the ball, leaving eight total returning starters for the 2010 season.
“We are spending a lot of time training new kids, which can be a challenge,” Rodgers said. “But while we are replacing a lot of players, we are doing it with quality people. These boys are determined to have a good team and are willing to battle through it. We will have a good team.”
The proof is in the pudding.

Argyle was recently recognized for yet another stellar school year, finishing runner up among Class 3A schools in the annual battle for the Lone Star Cup.
The Eagles -- who won their first Cup at the 3A level last year -- finished with 82 points this time, seven points behind winner Lucas Lovejoy. Lovejoy was the only Dallas-area school to win in any class.
“We were very pleased with how this year finished for us in athletics as well as academics,” Argyle head football coach and athletic coordinator Todd Rodgers said. “This was a non-marching year so we couldn’t get any points from our marching band like past years, but I think overall this was one of our better athletic years at Argyle.”

The list -- published by Rivals.com last Thursday -- is for the 2011 season and features 33 football players from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Of those 33, the Wildcats are tied for the second most on the list with Arlington Martin. Arlington Sam Houston has the most with four.

FMHS junior quarterback Paul Millard (7) playng last year.
A lot of attention has been placed on Flower Mound’s defense this spring. Losing last year’s playoff opener to Euless Trinity 88-27 will beg those sorts of questions.
But head coach Cody Vanderford doesn’t see a massive issue. True, while the Jags never had a problem scoring points last year and should be even better in 2010, the defense has plenty of question marks that he’s spent hours upon hours trying to answer this offseason. But Vanderford insists naysayers shouldn’t be so quick to pass judgment.

Quarterback Paul Millard (7) is returning to the offensive attack for Flower Mound this season.
The Flower Mound football team -- particularly members of its defensive unit -- have quite a big chip on their shoulder entering the 2010 season.
That’s because the last time they were on the field together, it was in an 88-27 first-round playoff debacle against Euless Trinity. The 88 points were the most given up for a single game in school history.
“They do (have a bad taste in their mouths), because when you get your pride hurt like that you are always going to have that reaction,” Jaguar head coach Cody Vanderford said. “We were really young last year, and what you don’t want is for that to carry over. You want to use it as motivation for this season and prove that the game (against Trinity) was more of an anomaly.”

Expectations have reached a fevered-pitch at Guyer.
The Wildcats haven’t played a down of Class 5A football, but are projected as the No. 4 ranked team in the Dallas Morning News’ preseason area poll. They are behind Trinity, Desoto and Allen on the list, but are ahead of other perennial favorites Cedar Hill, Coppell and Southlake Carroll.
“We are executing at a high level right now, and if we stay healthy, our product on the field could be as good as any,” Guyer head coach John Walsh said.

All in all, it was a great week for Guyer quarterback J.W. Walsh.
The senior-to-be held his own and turned a few heads at the ESPN RISE Elite 11 Quarterback Camp last week in Aliso Viejo, Calif. The event -- which is regarded as the nation’s premier QB camp for prep athletes -- provided high-level instruction for 12 of the nation’s top high school quarterbacks.

When Guyer passed on its guaranteed spot in this month’s 7-on-7 state football tournament to take part in last week’s Nike 7on national tournament, no one -- even coach John Walsh -- knew how’d they do.
They ended up finishing runner-up. And now everyone knows who they are.
“All eight teams that were there had multiple Division I players,” said Walsh, whose team lost 44-42 in double overtime to Miami Northwestern in the finals. “There were lots of unknowns because we weren’t sure where we stacked up. But we got after it, and we are going to be a better team because of it.”

With one more year remaining in his high school career, Guyer’s Blake Terry has already decided on his college future.
Terry recently committed to play football for the University of Kentucky and is now one of five Guyer standouts to have an opportunity to play for a BCS conference. Of course, oral commitments are non binding. The first day a 2011 recruit can sign a letter of intent is Feb. 2.
“Out of all the offers (he received), the fact that Kentucky is in the SEC and in a major conference played a huge part in his decision,” Guyer head coach John Walsh said. “This class is special, and I know this is a dream come true for Blake.”

Head coach John Walsh -- who per UIL rules is merely a spectator during the summer months -- confirmed the decision on Sunday. The Wildcats are one of 16 teams invited to the Nike 7on Tournament, slated for July 7-9 at the Nike World Headquarters. Guyer’s trip is all-expenses paid by Nike.

deionsanders
Recent move-in, Deion Sanders Jr. is currently Marcus Football’s signal caller, bringing new excitement to the program.
Back in November, Marcus head football coach Bryan Erwin admitted his team’s biggest question mark heading into the offseason was at quarterback. Not much has changed.
“It’s our biggest concern,” Erwin said of the quarterback position just days after his team was eliminated from the second round of playoffs. “In my 15 years of coaching I’ve never had this big a question mark at quarterback. We just don’t have anyone right now; there isn’t a lot of depth.”
