Marcus senior Cory Needs (41) and sophomore Phillip Forte (10) double up on FMHS senior Michael Coleman (23) previously this season.

On his first day at Marcus this summer, new boys’ basketball coach Danny Henderson told his team he wasn’t there to win district championships. Rather, he insisted on building a state powerhouse.

Henderson is doing just that as the Marauders (35-2) are slated to meet Arlington Bowie (31-6) at 6 p.m. on Friday at Fort Worth’s Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center in the Class 5A Region I Semifinals.  They advanced thanks to a wild 46-45 win on Monday over Jesuit when standout Marcus Smart scored with 20 seconds left in regulation.
