Those who have received communication from me for the last 2 years know that I have not commented on town or school issues, but the current tax increase election by LISD warrants an exception. I have received several requests to forward spending and other information that will probably urge you to get out and vote against this tax increase. While I don't doubt the information, frankly, I do not have the time to verify the numbers and don't think I need to. Instead, I wish to share a different perspective from someone who is old enough to have seen better days in our public schools.

So, after years of service the Denton County Transportation Authority has decided it is too expensive to take the elderly and handicapped where they need to go. If you are blind, deaf, mentally retarded or old you best move out of Denton County because you are not wanted. Ignoring the fact that no ridership fee covers the entire cost of operating transportation, that little extra for those in most need is just too much to bear. It makes me ashamed to have supported DCTA.

Once again the new Flower Mound Mayor and Town Council have showed us the meaning of poor judgment and pandering. At the August 2 Town Council Meeting, it was brought to our attention that two of their newly appointed Oil & Gas Advisory Board members had turned against the town. The mayor and council had a “deer caught in the headlights” look when evidence was presented that Prakash Parmeswaran and Jennifer Rogers, two Advisory Board members, are part of the group suing the town over the gas drilling ordinances.

I just finished reading your article regarding the Border Patrol agent who shot the Mexican boy and I could not agree more. Border patrol agents have to defend themselves and demand respect. While it is certainly a shame that the young man died, I hope the shooting sent a strong message of intolerance to all illegal immigrants. What is the penalty for flagrant disregard of law and order? With every action there is a reaction and the two are not always equal. Border patrol agents have to defend themselves and demand respect so that they can effectively guard and protect our borders.

With the possibility of negotiations starting-up once again, Double Oak needs to be cognizant of the fact that while gas drilling may temporarily benefit our pocketbooks, it may have far-wider reaching effects long after the money is spent. Our neighbors in Flower Mound have begun to take the dangers seriously by putting controls in place to protect its citizens.

I am humbled to know that so many of you cast your vote for me and the things I believe in. One of the greatest pleasures of this campaign has been to hear your concerns, share ideas, and make new friends. I truly have appreciated your support, kind words, and friendship. To my opponent, Mr. Lyda, I say, "congratulations!" I wish him well as he is thrust into a very difficult situation. Addressing the Town’s serious budget issues, meeting the expressed demands of the electorate, and maintaining the rights of mineral owners will be a tall task.

I read recently where the candidates that fared best in the recent state primary elections were those who most successfully tagged their opponents as being “liberal” and then, by default, were tied to the most unpopular policies of the Obama administration. I see the same thing happening in Flower Mound’s upcoming council and mayoral election.

I am disgusted by the recent activities in our very nice town. I see paint ball splats on candidate signs along 2499 and I hear about hate letters sent to residents. This is hurting our image and it is embarrassing to see these antics on the local news and I cringe to think it could hit the national news. Flower Mound is a great place to live, although recently it hasn’t felt so great.

Under Jody Smith's leadership Flower Mound has experienced the toughest and strongest Gas and Oil ordinances in the state of Texas. This has made us the envy of places like Fort Worth, South Lake and many others. We have seen a surge of economic development bringing us many restaurants and shopping venues to choose from.

Re: “Weir Only Human - How Much Abuse Should Officers Take?” 6/25/10. As a former 30-year federal law enforcement officer who can now only watch with growing concern while our men and women in uniform at all levels of government, federal, state, county and local, are being sold out in what seems to be a regular basis, it is encouraging to read a letter of support from a former cop turned editor. I have had the opportunity to watch both versions of the Border Patrol shooting you referenced; the government propaganda video from Univision and the cell phone video taken from a Mexican national, who clearly says in Spanish that the bad guy was pelting the officer with rocks.

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the lovely article written about Coram Deo in your June 11 issue.  Of course my viewpoint is prejudiced, but your kind words would make any reader see the school in a positive light.  I am also a parent of a 2010 graduate and was honored to have the Congressman speak at the event.  We are residents of Double Oak and receive your paper regularly.  I have always enjoyed the paper, but I now enjoy your publication with a heartfelt investment

Over the last month, several residents of Flower Mound have made public comments regarding the legal expenses of the town and the cost of defending lawsuits brought against us. It has been suggested that the town’s legal expenses have grown excessively and that we should give in to many of the lawsuits we face in order to save tax dollars. I would like to present facts regarding our legal expenses and put the minds of our residents at ease regarding the wise use of their tax dollars.

I always enjoy reading your columns, but I especially applaud your scathing exposé of the Westboro Baptist Church (Weir Only Human – False prophets are ravenous wolves 4/16/10). Let’s call it what it is, a cult. This hateful, deviant brand of religion is anathema to decent, civilized Americans. Here, we witness a first-hand example of what radical religion, taken to extreme by zealots who cherry-pick the Bible for scriptures that sanction their violent rhetoric, can lead to. It is not unlike the Ku Klux Klan which praises Christianity as a “whites only” religion, or the white supremacist, Nazi skinhead movement based in the Pacific Northwest.

Many in our nation were eager for “change” and look where we are now! We have more debt and more taxes than ever! Here in Flower Mound the “NFL Team” is also proposing “change.” If they are elected, my fear is, we, as citizens of Flower Mound, will be burdened with more lawsuits, which will result in increased taxes. Both Northern and Lyda are puppets of Filidoro, who, in my opinion, has turned into an unethical opportunist.

Like many Flower Mound residents, I have only recently awakened to local politics. I’ve been engaged in national issues over the years, reading about the politicians with questionable motives, the rhetoric back and forth, the scandals, the spin, etc.

We are urged and could be fined if we do not conserve water. However, gas companies are destroying millions of gallons of water. They add toxic chemicals to our water to flush out the gas. This water can never be used again. It is hauled off in large trucks and dumped into the ground to forever pollute and contaminate our water table, our soil and our air. Mayor Smith, Robinson and Webb, if elected, want this practice to continue.
