The LISD Board of Trustees will kick-off our district's "Recognized" rating celebration by honoring schools that earned an "Exemplary" or "Recognized" rating by the Texas Education Agency at the Sept. 3 Jaguar football game.

    The Greater Lewisville Special Education PTSA will host a September kick-off meeting and program Sept. 16 at the new Purnell Support Center (former DeLay Middle School campus), 136 W. Purnell St. in Lewisville. The topic is "Special Education 101 and ARD 101." Parents of students of all ages are welcome to attend.

LISD employees look forward to welcoming more than 50,500 students back to school on Monday, Aug. 23. As a reminder, the new school start times are as follows:

Elementary: ?7:50 a.m. - 2:50 p.m.
Middle School: ?8:45 a.m. - 4 p.m.
High School: ?8:15 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

    As required by law, the Board approved the district’s Student Code of Conduct for the upcoming school year. The purpose of the student code of conduct:
    Education in this community represents a significant commitment of financial and human resources. The benefits a student derives from this investment depend largely on the student’s attitude toward learning and the student’s adherence to high standards of behavior. The Student Code of Conduct is the District’s specific response to requirements of Chapter 37 of the Texas Education Code.

The Lewisville Independent School District adopted a tax rate that will raise more taxes for maintenance and operations than last year’s tax rate; and the tax rate will effectively be raised by 1.2223 percent and will raise taxes for maintenance and operations on a $100,000 home by approximately $12.80.

    The Bridlewood Elementary Destination ImagiNation (DI) team, "Dig-It," won second place out of more than 60 teams at the DI Global Finals tournament in Knoxville, Tenn. The team, comprised of students Katie Kelton, Erin Zilka, Emily Guthrie, Grace Cabuena, Tiffany Jones and Maggie McGee, competed in the "Do or DI" division. The team is managed by Teri Guthrie.

    The LISD Adult and Community Education Department is holding a Media Arts Camp June 28 - July 1 from 1 - 5 p.m. at the Dale Jackson Career Center for students 11 - 14 years of age. Students will learn about television production and design with the award-winning Dale Jackson Media Arts staff.

    Flower Mound High School student Connor Adams won the 1600 meter run at the UIL State Track and Field Meet in Austin. Marcus High School student Craig Lutz placed third in the event.

The Lewisville High School Band will hold a Play-A-Thon for donations on Sept. 11 at several locations. The band will play at the following locations and times: 8 - 8:30 a.m., Albertson's at the intersection of Main Street and Valley.

    During the Aug. 9 Board of Trustees meeting, the Board took action on the Superintendent of Schools search process, suspended the random drug testing program for high school students and adopted the 2010-11 Student Code of Conduct. The Board approved a measure to hire a search firm to perform a national search for the district’s next Superintendent of Schools. The Board directed the administration to seek bids from superintendent search firms. After the proposals have been submitted, the Board will interview the qualified search firms and approve its choice at a future Board meeting.

   Based on preliminary TAKS data released by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), district officials predict LISD will receive a Recognized rating for the second consecutive year. In fact, LISD missed receiving an "Exemplary" rating by 20 students. LISD currently has more than 50,300 students enrolled. This is a major accomplishment for all our LISD families and employees. TEA will release official district and campus ratings July 30.

     The Colony High School had 12 students participate in the Texas State Solo/Ensemble Competition. Students Cristian Lozano, Erin Pivarnik and Jordan Utter won gold medals at the competition. The Colony High School also had nine students win silver medals.

    Marcus High School sophomore Natalie Runnels recently won first place in the 26th Congressional District High School Art Competition for her pencil -Prismacolor piece entitled "America's Ballgame." Natalie's artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol complex for the coming year in the nationwide "An Artistic Discovery" exhibition beginning June 17. Marcus junior Lilly Brott won second place in the contest while Marcus senior Tiana Lord was voted the "Texas Choice" winner by popular vote.

The Flower Mound High School Dramatic Paw 'Prents troupe will perform "To See the Stars" May 20 - 22 at 7 p.m. in the Jack and Donna Clark Auditorium. "To See the Stars" is based on the events of the New York Shirtwaist Strike in 1909. The strike eventually led to the first industry-wide strike in American labor history.
