    School started smoothly Monday (Aug. 23) for 23,344 students, which is the number of students who attended school on the first day of class for the Denton Independent School District. The district’s enrollment count increased by 1,167 students from last year’s first-day-of-school numbers. School officials said these numbers also reflect the increase in the pre-school students. With the opening of the Gonzalez School for Young Children and adding three-year-olds, the pre-school count increased from 552 to 828, a 33 percent increase. The numbers from kindergarten through 12th grade went from 21,625 last year to 22,516. On Aug. 25, 2009, the enrollment was 22, 177 students. In five years, the district has grown by more than 25 percent. On Aug. 16, 2005, the enrollment on the first day of school was 17,351 students.

    The first school holiday for students of the Denton Independent School District will be Monday, Sept. 6, when the schools will be closed to observe the Labor Day Holiday. All schools and offices will be closed in observance of the holiday. The elementary school days start at 7:50 a.m. and ends at 2:50 p.m.; middle schools at 8:20 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. High school students’ school days operate from 8:50 a.m. to 3:50 p.m.

Registration for E.P.Rayzor and Blanton elementary students will be will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, and Friday, Aug.6. School officials said students who finished the past school year at a Denton ISD school must still register at the elementary school’s designated times and bring a proof of residency.

Guyer High staff will distribute “fast passes” from 2 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 3, through Thursday, Aug. 5. Schedule pick-up for seniors will be from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 9. Schedule pick-up for juniors will be from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 10.

The following University of North Texas students from Lantana were named to the President’s List for the 2010 spring semester. To be named to the President's List, undergraduates must complete at least 12 academic hours with a perfect grade point average of 4.0. Timothy Wayne Dunn, Jennifer Y Kim, Emily Laura Nielsen, Kathy Kaiqian Wang and Syed Mohammad Zeeshan.

Michelle Clayton is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of North Texas where she received a Bachelor of Science in Education. She has almost 14 years of teaching under her belt and began her career a fifth grade teacher in Lewisville ISD in 1996.

 Jordan Goldstein, a fifth-grade student at Blanton Elementary, was one of 35 students selected from across the state to participate in the Lone Star Leadership Academy during Spring Break, March 15 to 19, in Fort Worth. Goldstein joined other distinguished students in a weeklong program designed to build leadership skills and teach children about Texas.

Campus hours for the 2010-11 school year have changed. The new schedules are as follows: Elementary Schools – 7:50 a.m. to 2:50 p.m., Middle Schools – 8:20 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. and High Schools – 8:50 a.m. to 3:50 p.m. Proof of residency, which includes a photo ID and current utility bill, residential phone bill, or rental/lease agreement or closing purchase statement, is required to pick up students’ schedules.

Erin Turek is a graduate of Baylor University where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Performance. She has five years of teaching experience under her belt and turned a student teaching assignment with the district into the associate theatre director position at Denton High in 2005 and remained there until 2008, when she became the theatre director at Harpool Middle School.

    Denton Independent School District’s Extended School Day program will have its registration day for the 2010-11 school year from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, April 17, at Strickland Middle School. The ESD officials will be on hand to help with registration and answer questions about the after-school program. Registration packets can be picked up at all elementary school campuses prior to registration and submitted to ESD staff on registration day.

  The Denton Independent School District recognized its top readers in the third grade through its annual Hawkeye reading program, an educational plan established by the late Mildred McCauley Hawk. The district recognized three Hawkeye readers from each elementary school campus, including 15 from the Southern portion of the district and Lantana, giving Denton ISD a total of 60 top readers in the program for the 2009-10 school year.

    The dedication for Blanton Elementary is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the school, located at 9501 Stacee Lane in Argyle.
