October is breast cancer awareness month. Thanks to the efforts
of the millions of individuals affected by breast cancer the treatment
options for this terrible disease continue to grow. Historical
perspective shows us how far we have come in the surgical treatment of
breast cancer.

My career as a surgeon is always interesting. I constantly get
asked about television shows or movies concerning the medical
field. Most Hollywood adaptations of medicine are fantasy, but
during five years of surgical training, I saw a lifetime’s worth
of stories. The trauma hall was where the acutely injured
patients were initially evaluated.
