    Since the last U.S. Census was taken in 2000, our state's population has undergone significant transformations. North Texas appears to have overtaken the Houston area as the state's largest population hub. Frisco and Lewisville are now more populated than Odessa and Wichita Falls. Denton's population exceeds that of Abilene, Midland and Beaumont. In South Texas, Laredo may have overtaken the Panhandle's Lubbock as the nation's 86th most populated city.

     There's nothing more important than the safety and well being of our children. We all want to do all we can to protect children from accidental injury, or worse, a tragic loss of life. Summer should be a time for fun.

When the Department of Family & Protective Services removed 416 children from a polygamous sect near Eldorado, it drew statewide attention to perhaps the single greatest challenge facing our state's child welfare system; finding safe, supportive homes for displaced children.
