On his first day at Marcus this summer, new boys� basketball coach Danny Henderson told his team he wasn�t there to win district championships. Rather, he insisted on building a state powerhouse.

Henderson is doing just that as the Marauders (35-2) are slated to meet Arlington Bowie (31-6) at 6 p.m. on Friday at Fort Worth�s Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center in the Class 5A Region I Semifinals. They advanced thanks to a wild 46-45 win on Monday over Jesuit when standout Marcus Smart scored with 20 seconds left in regulation.

Marcus � the state�s fifth-ranked Class 5A team � will take its amazing 32-2 record and 11-game win streak into the upcoming Class 5A playoffs.

First-year head coach Danny Henderson said he wasn�t certain who his team would face in the first round as a veritable quagmire surfaced in District 5-5A heading into Tuesday�s regular-season finale. The only thing he knew was it could be any of the three Keller schools (Central, Fossil Ridge and Keller).

That tough non-district schedule is paying off big for the Flower Mound girls� basketball team.

The Jaguars � who were 12-12 overall heading into District 6-5A play � are now 3-1 in league action after dismantling Lewisville on Tuesday, 55-36. Since losing the district opener to Marcus, the Jags have won the last three by an average margin of 26 points per game.

Marcus suffers rare loss

Marcus took a rare loss on Tuesday, falling to Desoto 44-42 in non-district action.

Antoine Space paced the Eagles (20-3) with 21 points, including a pretty off-balance turnaround jumper in the lane with 1.2 seconds left in regulation. Marcus (21-2) was led by Marcus Smart�s 18 points.

A year after losing to Ardmore, the Argyle boys� basketball team has its revenge.

The Eagles (7-1) won the rematch 55-43 on Tuesday and extended their new win streak to three games heading into this weekend�s Weatherford Tournament. Unfortunately, scores from Thursday�s opening round of tournament action were not available as of press time.

Marcus used a 15-2 run in the third quarter to outlast Highland Park 57-47 on Tuesday.

The Marauders improved to 9-1 overall with the win and took an eight-game winning streak into this weekend�s Marauder-Jaguar Classic. Marcus was slated to face Denton Ryan in the first round, though no scores were available as of press time.

The Marcus girls� basketball team improved to 8-4 overall on Tuesday with a 64-45 win over Frisco Liberty in non-district action.

Prior to tip off, head coach Kit Kyle insisted she wasn�t sure what to think of her team, but she had to be pleased with the win � which was their fourth over the last five games.

Jaguar girls lose to MacArthur

Liberty wins summer tournament

Despite facing teams comprised of some of the top players in the state, the Liberty Christian boys� basketball team took first place at the Denton Summer Shootout.

The tournament � which wrapped up July 19 � saw the Warriors beat the Lubbock Mustangs 54-45 in the finals. Christian Scofield averaged 20 points per game for Liberty, which went 5-1 at the event.

Dickerson earns MVP

Argyle�s Caden Dickerson was named Most Valuable Player at the recent Texas High School Coaches� Association All Star Basketball game.

Dickerson � a Western Kentucky signee � led all scorers with 21 points to lead the North team past the South 81-80 last Monday. He was one of two MVP�s on the night as the South team named San Antonio Stephens� Brandon Thompson as its MVP.

The new Marcus boys� basketball coach � who was hired back on May 18 � moved with his wife and two daughters from Peaster only a few short weeks ago. Since then, he�s juggled his enthusiasm for meeting his coaching staff and players with trying to get settled in a new home.

Bass no longer head coach at Marcus, replacement to be named soon

Lewisville ISD athletic director Randy Mayes confirmed the news on Sunday, stating Bass � who came to Marcus in 2001 after a successful career at Highland Park � asked to be reassigned 10 days ago.

Marcus eliminated by Duncanville

Marcus had its season halted on Friday at the hands of Duncanville � the state�s fifth-ranked team.

The 42-26 Class 5A area-round loss put an end to a season in which the Marauders posted a 20-13 record and won the District 6-5A title with a talented roster featuring just one returning starter. They beat Grapevine 52-35 in the first round a week ago but shot just 22 percent against the Panthers.
