North Texas Population Growth Will Drive Redistricting Debate

Since the last U.S. Census was taken in 2000, our state's population has undergone significant transformations. North Texas appears to have overtaken the Houston area as the state's largest population hub. Frisco and Lewisville are now more populated than Odessa and Wichita Falls. Denton's population exceeds that of Abilene, Midland and Beaumont. In South Texas, Laredo may have overtaken the Panhandle's Lubbock as the nation's 86th most populated city.

Senator calls for air-monitoring station

Truth in Grading Benefits Students, Teachers and Texas

At a time of heightened scrutiny of how well our public schools are preparing students for college and the workforce, it is difficult to believe that 11 Texas school districts want to overturn a state law requiring truthful grading practices. If these districts are successful, teachers could be forbidden from assigning grades that reflect a student's work if those grades fall below an artificial minimum set by administrators.

Schools important for children�s physical fitness

Prior to the 2001 Legislature, a mother contacted me because her 2nd grader was sitting behind a desk all day with no physical education, no recess -- only leaving for a 30-minute lunch break. I couldn't believe this was true. PE was a bedrock part of the school day when I was in school. As a teacher, my students exercised on a daily basis, which I loved because they returned to class alert and ready to learn. Unfortunately, this parent was not mistaken.

Senator urges vigilance to save the children
